Matthew 11:28 - Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
This may be the perfect verse to follow the Christmas season... but, Jesus isn't referring to simple exhaustion from running around getting things ready. No. The Lord is making this beautiful offer of rest to you who are fatigued in general. Maybe the weight of stress, uncertainty, pain, loss, struggle and unending ministry needs has you feeling like you just can't keep going. My friend, don't grow weary in well doing. Jesus says to you to come to Him... and He will give you rest. The rest that Christ offers is so much more than just kicking your feet up; it's a rest that is deep within the soul, the mind and can affect the body if we are renewed in the Holy Spirit. How, then, do we come to Jesus for this needed rest? My favorite way is to open my bible at our kitchen table with a cup of freshly brewed coffee and a piece of toast next to me. That way I can read the bible without my stomach growling and distracting me. I can read, pray, sip, read, contimplate, meditate, read, pray, bite, read... and so it continues until my heart, soul, mind and spirit are renewed and the peace of Christ comes upon me. How long does it take? As long as it takes. Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.
